The answer is NO.
I know that side-lit lighting has many benefits, such as, easy to transport, uhm… easy to transport… Maybe you will argue that there are no other advantages? For instance, it is said that the light emitted by the side-lit luminaire will be softer.
Oh really?
Logically speaking, the softness of the light emitted by the luminaire is directly related to the nature of the diffuser plate. So theoretically, if the diffuser plate is opaque enough, direct-lit luminaires can emit any soft light. On top of it, maybe more important, direct-lit luminaires can achieve the most desirable luminous efficiency by controlling the degree of opacity of the diffuser.
To illustrate the issue, I have drawn two schematic diagrams, respectively representing the light paths of side-lit and direct-lit luminaires. The left is the light path of the side-lit luminaire, and the right is the light path of the direct-lit luminaires.

Since only a small portion of light is directly emitted through the diffuser plate, and most of the light is emitted after being reflected once or more times through the light guide plate and diffuser plate, the luminous efficiency of side-lit luminaire is very low. To achieve the same illuminance, the side-lit luminaire must increase their power, and at the same time, the heat dissipation area of their light sources is very small. In the case of high power and small heat dissipation area, side-lit lamps are prone to damage.
Another undesirable side effect of side-emitting luminaires is that as you can see from the figure, the attenuation of light in the side-lit luminaire is increasing as the light propagates towards the center along the direction of the light guide plate. This results in uneven light emission between the edges and the center of the side-lit lamp. To reduce this unevenness, people must enhance the opacity of the diffuser plate, which makes the already low luminous efficiency even lower.
On the other hand, direct-lit luminaires do not have these issues. Moreover, as mentioned earlier; to achieve the same luminous softness as side-lit luminaires, it is only necessary to simply adjust the opacity of the diffusion plate. This is simpler than side-lit luminaires both in principle and the production process. Meanwhile, it also results in lower power consumption and a larger heat dissipation area of the light source.
To sum up, in addition to the small size and easy transportation, the side-lit luminaires have no advantages in terms of structural simplicity, luminous efficiency and life span.
